Canton sits at the foot of the Blue Hills where the Neponset River leaves the high ground and slows into the marshes along the Norwood and Sharon lines. Paul Revere opened his copper rolling mill on the river here in 1801, the Canton Viaduct has carried trains over the Neponset since 1835, and the mill housing around Canton Center and Canton Junction dates from that century.
